Data center power

Critical power for data centers.

Power distribution, backup generation and commissioning support. Torus installs and tests the electrical systems that keep a data center running: medium-voltage distribution, generator paralleling, UPS, automatic and static transfer switches, PDUs and RPPs, and power monitoring.

The power path

From the utility to the rack.

Every link between the utility and the white space is a place where a single failure can drop load. These are the systems Torus installs and tests along the way.

  1. 01

    Utility feeds

    Redundant sources with automatic transfer

  2. 02

    MV switchgear

    Main-tie-main, sync-check relaying

  3. 03

    Transformers

    Pad-mount and dry-type, down to 480 V

  4. 04

    Generators

    Closed-transition paralleling, NFPA 110 Level 1

  5. 05

    UPS

    Double conversion, lithium-ion or VRLA

  6. 06

    STS, PDUs and busway

Source selection and distribution to the rows

Primary power

Medium-voltage distribution.

Redundant utility feeds and automatic transfer, so a single upstream failure doesn’t reach the white space.

Dual-feed switchgear

Main-tie-main metal-clad switchgear lineups with automatic throwover and sync-check relaying, so the bus stays fed when a utility source drops.

Step-down transformers

Pad-mount and indoor dry-type transformers down to 480 V, installed and tested before energization.

Backup generation

Generator paralleling.

When the utility drops, generators have to start, synchronize and pick up the load within the time the design requires. We build and test the switchgear that does it.

Closed-transition paralleling

Load sharing, protective relays and synchronizers for transfers to and from utility power without dropping load.

Fuel and controls

Day tanks, transfer pumps, leak detection and emergency shutoffs, installed to NFPA 110 Level 1 requirements.

Load bank testing

Step-load tests at 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent to verify voltage, frequency, transient response and cooling.

Critical power

UPS, transfer switches and power distribution.

UPS systems

Modular double-conversion UPS lineups with lithium-ion or VRLA batteries, installed to the manufacturer’s requirements.

Automatic and static transfer switches (ATS and STS)

ATS for transfer between utility and generator sources, and STS for fast source selection between redundant buses on single-corded loads.

PDUs and remote power panels (RPPs)

Power distribution units and remote power panels that carry critical power from the UPS to the rows and racks.

Overhead busway

Continuous busway runs with plug-in tap boxes for high-density racks.

Commissioning

Five levels, from factory to failover.

Data center commissioning runs in five levels. Torus crews support the electrical scope, from installation checks through integrated systems testing (IST).

  1. Factory witness testing

Generators, UPS and switchgear are tested at the factory before shipment.

  2. Delivery and inspection

Equipment is received, inspected for shipping damage and checked against the submittals.

  3. Pre-functional checks

Point-to-point wiring checks, torque, insulation resistance and breaker testing before energization.

  4. Functional performance testing

Each system runs on its own: generator load steps, UPS battery discharge, transfer sequences.

  5. Integrated systems testing

The whole facility is tested together, including simulated utility failure, failover and heat-load testing.

Power monitoring

Power monitoring and event recording.

Meters, time-synchronized event recording and Modbus monitoring of circuits and busway, so breaker operations and disturbances can be reconstructed and explained.
